ING’s Payment and Settlement Services (“PSS”) aims to further mature, develop and expand ING’s state of the art payments platforms and settlements services. The PSS focusses on delivering payments and settlement services, meeting the expectations of ING’s business lines and beyond, whilst ensuring the basics: safe, secure, compliant, and reliable. The PSS is an independent unit within ING’s COO domain, reporting directly into ING’s Chief Operating Officer.

The PSS is responsible for providing standardized payments and settlements services to multiple ING business lines (WB, Retail, and others). There is a clear ambition to also look for external commercialization of our payment platforms.

The PSS changes the organization towards a true Services-based organization and to deliver on ambitious promises, we have organized ourselves into a strong strategic and commercially focused organization around our eight services, where our squads working on those products are enabled by clear prioritization, accountability, and capabilities. And right there, the ‘SRE Experts’ comes in.

As an SRE Expert, you will play a pivotal role in guiding tribe(s) toward achieving their Site Reliability Engineering objectives. You will operate with a high degree of autonomy, balancing the priorities of individual tribes with those of the broader organization. This role requires strategic thinking, strong stakeholder alignment, and the ability to collaborate within a distributed team—each member focusing on a specific tribe.

The Team:

The team of expert leads has no hierarchical structure and reports directly to the IT lead. Each SRE Expert leads a tribe(s) in regards to their SRE practices and implementations. You are participating in Global SRE Guilds and have are responsible for a set of SRE capabilities.

Roles and responsibilities

As a SRE Expert you are dedicated to supporting the PSS SRE Team in their SRE objectives. The SRE focus is on creating a reliable and available service for customers. This role holds multiple facets and, dependent on the match with your skills, can entail the following activities:

  • Support or perform in depth reviews and analysis on Asset/Service implementations regarding their monitoring and alerting setup;
  • Support or perform in depth reviews and analysis on Asset/Service implementations regarding their resilience architectural design;
  • Provide knowledge sessions about SRE topics, like SLI/SLO definition and setup, how to perform resilience testing, review DR plans, identify toil etc.;
  • Analyze and help support in Root Cause analysis and Post-Mortems, help identify the necessary improvement actions to prevent the incident in the future;
  • By (Incident, Problem, Change) data analysis identify structural improvements and advocate them in the organization;
  • Provide hands-on support in case application teams are struggling with implementing ING monitoring and alerting standards.
  • The SRE Expert role is one that requires flexibility and agility with switching technical expertise’s and communicative skills to facilitate the organization best.
  • Contribute to the E&R organisation
  • Is part of a Global SRE Guild.

How to succeed:

PSS SRE is looking for a broad skillset for an SRE Expert, comprising of both modern-day and legacy IT stacks. Knowledge of coding, testing and CI/CD standards along with a healthy dose of curiosity is a given in you. You are not afraid of a challenge no matter what the subject is. Impediments are for you there to get solved, neglecting them is a direct crime in your book.

Currently we are looking for someone that feels they fit the above description and has an understanding of the below technical skill set.

  • Extensive knowledge of Linux (RHEL) or Windows.
  • Good Knowledge of SQL and familiarity with RDBMS databases (Oracle, MS SQL) or NoSQL (Cassandra);
  • Good knowledge of CI/DC standards (preferably Azure DEV OPS);
  • Extensive knowledge of IT tools to share and collaborate;
  • Extensive experience with monolithic application landscape;
  • Good knowledge in at least one programming language;
  • Good knowledge in Networking and IPV4 and IPV6 stacks
  • Must have experience with monitoring and alerting tools (Prometheus, elk, Grafana etc). Knowledge of open telemetry is a bonus.
  • Familiarity with Site Reliability Engineering – (SRE) (concept, SLI, SLO, error budgeting, availability reporting)
  • Ability to understand Consumers and engineers
  • Problem solving mentality
  • Strong voice and healthy scepticism.
  • Good knowledge of containers and cloud tooling

Overall nice to have skills

  • Knowledge and experience in using open telemetry
  • Good knowledge of IT security principles

The working location is Amsterdam, the Netherlands
