Head of Conduct Compliance & Culture

ING Australia’s compliance team is looking to hire a Head of Conduct Compliance & Ethics to be based out of Sydney. At ING, we also call these positions “Leads”.

The Head of Conduct Compliance and Ethics (CC&E) leads a team providing second line oversight and leadership of CC&E activities, ensuring the compliance risk management cycle is executed effectively and that stakeholders receive timely, practical advice, challenge and escalation on conduct and ethics matters.

Conduct Culture and Ethics manages risks arising from Unfair Customer Treatment, Conflicts of Interest, Market Conduct, Anti- Competition, Organisational Conduct and helps ING manage risks arising from behaviors related to risk awareness, risk-taking and risk management. The role of Head of Conduct Compliance and Ethics is instrumental in further enhancing and embedding of the compliance risk management culture within ING.

This is a senior role, with executive level visibility and defined regulatory decision making and you will form part of the Compliance leadership team, and the extended Risk leadership team.

You will oversee and challenge  the local implementation of  regulatory requirements and ING compliance by means of issue tracking, monitoring, Risk Dashboards and other risk specific reporting (regulatory and internal reporting) to internal stakeholders, including ING’s Head Office Compliance function.

You will also oversee our breach reporting processes, including to APRA, ASIC and BCCC. You will form determinations on breach assessments and provide recommendations to accountable persons.

You will lead a team of four direct reports, and fifteen team members overall.

What you’ll do

  • Leading the Compliance Conduct Ethics team, including coaching, feedback and development of talent
  • Leading or Providing SME advice and support to business partners on regulatory and industry code obligations (e.g. ASIC Act, Corporations Act, NCCP Act)
  • Overseeing and forming judgements on breach determinations
  • Overseeing and challenging business-led change (marketing, products, or change initiatives)
  • Working with other Compliance leads including Financial Crime and Data Protection to ensure full coverage of the Compliance risk domain
  • Building and maintaining a database of best practice advices to support the CCE team in providing high quality consistent advice
  • Provide support to the team including continuous improvement of process and procedures
  • Providing advice on improvement of compliance processes and procedures.


What we’re looking for

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in compliance, legal, or non-financial risk roles in the financial services industry
  • Significant people leadership, with experience as a leader of leaders preferred
  • Experience working for a regulator would be highly desirable, alternatively extensive experience interacting with regulators
  • Strong influencing skills and ability to ensure optimal outcomes are achieved whilst managing stakeholder expectations
  • Excellent understanding of compliance risks and control frameworks in retail banking
  • Experience in investigations into non-compliance with financial sector legislation, specifically root cause analysis
  • Ability to lead investigations and provide a high standard of written / verbal communication to senior leadership
  • Sound analytical skills and the ability to make decisions, critically assess and determine appropriate action in time pressured environments
  • The ability to drive positive risk culture practices and experience of this in team leadership
  • Expert understanding of relevant legislation.
