Role
As an intern in the Liquidity & IRRBB Tooling (LIT) squad, you will support the team in developing, refining, and operationalizing the models, data pipelines, and analytical tools that underpin ING’s liquidity and interest rate risk management. This internship offers hands‑on exposure to large‑scale balance sheet modelling, QRM configuration, data flows, and risk analytics within a dynamic agile environment. You will collaborate daily with risk specialists, modellers, data engineers, and stakeholders across the Modelling Tribe to help deliver high‑quality, reliable solutions that support ING’s global liquidity management.

The team
The Liquidity & IRRBB Tooling (LIT) squad sits at the heart of ING’s treasury and risk landscape. We work closely with Group Treasury and Financial Risk to ensure the bank measures, manages, and steers liquidity risk and interest rate risk in a robust and forward‑looking way. Our squad supports ING’s global balance sheet management by helping shape how liquidity metrics, behavioural models, and interest rate risk insights are generated and interpreted.

As an intern, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team of financial risk specialists who collaborate across the Modelling Tribe and the wider treasury organisation. The team culture is open, analytical, and impact‑driven: we focus on understanding business needs, translating them into practical modelling and risk solutions, and ensuring stakeholders across Treasury, Risk, and Finance can rely on accurate, well‑governed outcomes. You will gain deep exposure to the commercial and regulatory dynamics that drive balance sheet strategy and risk management at ING.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the analysis of liquidity and interest rate risk metrics used by Group Treasury and Financial Risk, helping to understand trends, behaviours, and balance sheet dynamics.
  • Assist in preparing business‑focused insights for stakeholders by translating modelling outputs into clear, actionable explanations.
  • Contribute to reviews of liquidity and IRRBB models and methodologies, including behavioural assumptions and regulatory metrics.
  • Help map and document end‑to‑end data and process flows within the liquidity and risk framework, ensuring transparency and consistency across stakeholders.
  • Participate in refinement sessions with Treasury, Risk, and other squads to help gather requirements and structure problem statements.
  • Perform exploratory analysis on balance sheet movements, customer behaviour, and interest rate sensitivities to support risk and treasury decision‑making.
  • Support continuous improvement of internal documentation, conceptual papers, and stakeholder communication materials.

Qualifications:

  • You are currently enrolled in a Master’s or final‑year Bachelor’s programme in Finance, Economics, Econometrics, Data Science, or a related quantitative field.
  • Strong analytical mindset with an interest in balance sheet management, liquidity risk, and interest rate risk.
  • Comfortable working with data (e.g., Excel, SQL, or similar tools) and able to translate analysis into clear insights.
  • Curious, proactive, and eager to understand how Treasury and Financial Risk steer the bank.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex topics in a simple and structured way.
  • A team player who enjoys working with diverse stakeholders across Treasury, Risk, and the Modelling Tribe.
  • Fluent in English

What We Offer:

  • A front‑row learning experience in Treasury and Financial Risk, with direct exposure to liquidity management, IRRBB, and balance sheet steering.
  • The chance to work alongside experienced risk specialists and treasury stakeholders, gaining insight into how strategic decisions are made at bank‑wide level.
  • A supportive, open, and knowledge‑sharing team culture where curiosity is encouraged and your ideas can genuinely contribute to ongoing work.
  • Hands‑on experience with real‑world analyses, balance sheet dynamics, and regulatory concepts that will strengthen your academic knowledge and professional profile.
  • Opportunities for personal development through feedback, guidance, and collaboration across the Modelling Tribe, Group Treasury, and Financial Risk.
