Internship Scope

The internship will consist of two complementary workstreams:

1. Research Track: Engineering Productivity and AI Impact

The intern will conduct academic and industry research focused on understanding and evaluating engineering productivity within ING. The research will examine:

• Current approaches used by ING to measure engineering productivity, developer experience, and AI impact.
• The influence of AI-enabled engineering practices and engineering platforms on productivity and delivery outcomes.
• Industry best practices, frameworks, and benchmarks for measuring engineering effectiveness.
• Opportunities and challenges in attributing business and engineering outcomes to platform capabilities and AI adoption.
• Recommendations for improving the interpretation and use of engineering metrics in decision-making. 

The outcome of this track is expected to be a research-based assessment of ING's current approach, enriched with academic insights and industry comparisons.

2. Engineering / Technology Track: Insights Engineer Proof of Concept

In parallel, the intern will design and develop a Proof of Concept (PoC) for an "Insights" capability. The objective is to move beyond collecting engineering metrics and towards generating meaningful, actionable insights from them.

Potential capabilities of the PoC include:

• Translating engineering metrics into business and engineering interpretations.
• Detecting trends, patterns, and anomalies across engineering datasets.
• Identifying correlations and potential relationships between metrics.
• Providing contextual explanations of observed metric changes.
• Generating hypotheses about root causes and contributing factors.
• Producing recommended actions for engineering leaders, product managers, and platform teams.
• Leveraging AI capabilities to support automated analysis, narrative generation, and insight discovery.

The long-term vision is to explore how AI can help engineering leaders move from dashboard consumption to insight-driven decision-making by automatically interpreting engineering data and highlighting opportunities for improvement.

• Validating the feasibility of an AI-assisted insights engineering capability for engineering leadership and platform organizations.

Please note that for this internship it is mandatory to be currently enrolled as a student at a Dutch University.
