Summary

As a Solution Architect, you enhance the design and implementation quality of IT systems by optimizing technology infrastructure, operational efficiency, scalability, reliability, and security. Your role is crucial in ensuring seamless alignment between design, implementation, business objectives, and architectural principles.

The Team

You will be part of an experienced team of 30+ domain and solution architects. Working closely with Business and Technology colleagues, this team is responsible for the design and architectural governance of ING’s Global Payment & Settlement Services.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Act as the liaison between Domain Architects and DevOps teams.

  • Understand business context, needs, rules, architecture, organizational structure, culture, capabilities, and processes.

  • Translate regulations (e.g., laws), policies, and requirements into practical solutions.

  • Document "as-is" and "to-be" processes and designs, outlining necessary changes for migration (e.g., roadmaps, migration plans).

  • Organize and support DevOps team workshops and presentations to facilitate design and decision-making (e.g., Architecture Content Meetings, Architecture Review Meetings).

  • Apply architecture patterns, including Request/Reply, Event-driven architecture (e.g., Kafka), Microservices, and Resilience patterns (e.g., retry strategies).

  • Develop well-architected patterns by co-creating cookbooks and training developers on their application, escalating deviations when necessary.

  • Translate Solution Architectures into Feature Solution Approaches in collaboration with DevOps teams.

  • Stay up to date with Platform Architecture trends, particularly in Cloud-Native Applications and the Well-Architected Framework.

  • Support DevOps teams in defining and estimating Epics, Features, and User Stories to improve predictability in PSS and QBR processes.

  • Identify and escalate instances of non-compliance with organizational policies, procedures, or regulatory requirements.

  • Monitor and review service performance, ensuring compliance with policies and regulatory codes.

  • Ensure alignment between code development and architecture/design guidelines, guiding developers and escalating compliance issues when necessary.

Qualifications

  • At least five years of experience as an engineer or architect.

  • Experience working in highly regulated environments (e.g., financial institutions).

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical topics to diverse audiences.

  • Strong ability to build collaborative partnerships with organizational leaders.

  • A continuous improvement mindset—constantly enhancing your skills while mentoring and training others.

  • In-depth knowledge of IT architecture methodologies (e.g., TOGAF), service management processes, and agile work environments.
