Financial Markets Graduate Programme - Amsterdam

Always wanted to know what happens on a trading floor? This is your chance!

During the one-year Financial Markets graduate programme you will gain hands-on experience through two rotations across different Financial Markets desks. You will be an integral part of a team, contributing to solutions from day one and learn how to provide flawless execution for ING’s trusted clients!You will work in a dynamic, international environment where you learn at a fast pace and will get involved right from the start.

The opportunity in a nutshell

Our Financial Markets graduate programme is a full-time one-year work experience with a steep learning curve, consisting of two rotations of six months each. The programme is a unique opportunity to get full insight into our Financial Markets franchise and provides you with a solid foundation and strong market knowledge, so you are well positioned for your next challenge. During the programme you will work as a salesperson, structurer or trader and quickly familiarise yourself with our clients, products, and the market.

In the first few months you will join a two-week training programme in Amsterdam and London where you will have the opportunity to meet graduates from different Financial Markets locations and obtain a thorough understanding of other departments within the Wholesale Bank.

As part of the programme a senior member will be assigned to you as your mentor and one of our former graduates will be assigned as your buddy. They will not only help you find your way around the organisation and help you answer practical questions but are fully committed to make your first year a success.

Upon successful completion of the programme, we aim to provide you a full-time position within ING Financial Markets. The initial placement will be in Amsterdam but Financial Markets is a truly global franchise. In simple words: when you permanently join ING Financial Markets, you have the opportunity to see the world!

About Financial Markets (FM)

FM is part of the ING Wholesale Bank, which represents all Corporate and Investment Banking activities of ING. We have a global footprint with local reach, deep sector expertise and we play a pivotal role in areas of sustainability and innovation.

FM is the bank’s gateway to the professional markets around the world. In short, we assist our clients with hedging risks by means of derivatives and we distribute bonds, loans, and equities towards investors. The client related business is supported by Structuring expertise and Trading liquidity. Our main goal is to help our clients navigate the markets to position them for growth.

About the FM graduate programme

The FM graduate programme will introduce you to our sales, structuring and trading activities. Rotations are matched to your skillset and our business needs.

Financial Markets Sales

Salespeople provide both flow and highly bespoke solutions to clients. Clients can be categorised into three segments: Financial Institutions, Corporate and Mid-Corporate clients. We typically look for people with a strong commercial understanding combined with a numerical oriented mindset.

Financial Markets Structuring

Structuring is a collective term for product specialists dedicated to specific asset classes and themes around those asset classes. People that work here have strong quantitative skills combined with a collaborative mindset. You will have strong internal relationships as well as some direct client relationships.

Financial Markets Trading

Financial Markets trading manages market risk and covers flow by interacting closely with the sales desks and other market participants. Traders have a deep, often quantitative, understanding of risk management and the various hedging instruments.

About you. Do you have what it takes?

ING Financial Markets is looking for candidates with the drive and enthusiasm to take on big challenges and the collaboration skills to bring others along with them. You have:

  • Obtained a master's degree and a maximum of two years of full-time working experience
  • A strong affinity with the financial markets
  • A pro-active, enthusiastic, and professional attitude
  • Substantial part-time work experience and/or extracurricular activities will be a plus
  • Solid numerical skills and like to pay attention to detail
  • A proficiency in MS Office and a coding language is an advantage
  • And finally, you are fluent in English; fluency in Dutch is an advantage

About the application process
Applications are currently open until end of April for the Financial Markets graduate programme position in Amsterdam starting 1 September 2023.

Round 1: submit your online application

The first stage of the selection process is to submit your CV and motivation letter and ING will be in touch about your first screening.

Round 2: Orange Code interview

Should you pass the first screening, we will invite you for an interview with a current member of the FM graduate programme. We will ask you questions based on the ING Orange Code and focus on how you align with the ING culture.

Round 3: business panel

The next stage is an interview with a representative of one of our Financial Markets desks and a programme manager that will focus on your knowledge of the financial markets, personal skills and motivation.

Round 4: management panel

The last stage is an interview with a senior member of the Financial Markets management team. If you succeed, you will receive an offer for a position in our Financial Markets Graduate Programme in Amsterdam.
