The IT Resilience, Risk and Security tribe is part of the Engineering & Reliability (E&R) domain, focusing on strengthening the reliability, security, and resilience of ING’s digital infrastructure. Within this tribe, the Center of Expertise (CoE) Local SRE team plays a key role in ensuring the availability, performance, and scalability of our own E&R systems. You are a Senior Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) who combine software engineering skills with a passion for reliability and automation.

The team

The E&R CoE Local SRE team is instrumental in maintaining a reliable, scalable, and high-performing 1 Engineering System (1ES). By focusing on availability, performance, observability, and effective incident response, the team continuously improves system reliability. Key objectives include increasing Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), reducing Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR), and minimizing operational complexity.

The team supports efficient operations and reduces cognitive load for engineering teams by providing standards, best practices, tooling, and deep technical expertise.

Team structure
The team consists of one SRE Lead and two Senior SREs, all based in the Netherlands. They are supported by colleagues in ING’s RO Hubs, who provide expertise in ITIL-based processes and operational execution.

Global collaboration
As part of the Engineering & Reliability (E&R) domain, the team works closely with the Global SRE (GSRE) organization and the Global Process Owners (GPOs). Together, they drive and govern global processes and best practices, ensuring consistency and excellence across ING’s global technology landscape.

Roles and responsibilities

As a Senior Site Reliability Engineer, you combine software engineering with reliability engineering. You setup tooling, frameworks, and automation that improve platform reliability and reduce operational burden.

  • Design and build scalable, reliable software solutions and roll out new resilience features
  • Setup internal tools and frameworks for observability, incident response, and automation
  • Optimize CI/CD pipelines and deployment patterns (VMs, containers, Kubernetes)
  • Define and monitor Service Level Objectives (SLOs)
  • Conduct Well-Architected Reviews and observability assessments
  • Improve incident response and post-mortem practices
  • Eliminate manual work (toil) through automation
  • Coach DevOps teams on SRE and software engineering best practices
  • Initiate SRE initiatives such as AI Ops, Chaos Engineering, cloud migrations, and Error Budgeting
  • Actively participate in Root Cause Analyses and follow up on improvement actions

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering and/or SRE
  • Proficiency in modern programming/Scripting languages such as Python, Go, Ruby, Java, Bash or PowerShell
  • Experience with CI/CD tooling (Azure DevOps, OnePipeline)
  • Deep knowledge of cloud-native architectures, Kubernetes, and container platforms (OpenShift, AKS)
  • Experience with observability tools such as ELK, Prometheus, Kafka, Splunk
  • Understanding of ITSM processes and Agile ways of working
  • Solid understanding of service level objectives like Availability, MTTR, and MTBF
  • Good understanding of microservices architecture and high availability patterns
  • Proven experience as a Site Reliability Engineer or DevOps engineer
  • Strong analytical skills and a proactive mindset
  • Experience coaching and mentoring engineering teams
  • Excellent oral and written English skills
