Global Monitoring IT Area

Our department is at the IT heart of ING. Our purpose is to build a truly Global Observability Platform that enables ING services to run seamlessly and puts engineers in control of their observability. We are a diverse team working from all over the world with passion for engineering and great attention to non-functional requirements. We trust our engineers and we guide them in making an impact and in their professional growth. Although we are a big team (80+ people) we stay lean and improve on daily basis. We are responsible for developing and operating the observability technologies of ING, the in-house build components are coded with Java, Golang or Python.

Roles and responsibilities

The engineers in your chapter are focusing on software development, in particular backends with Java and Golang. As lead of this team you are a seasoned Java or Golang engineer, you can build feature, coach others and bring best practices forward.

As a Chapter Lead at Global Monitoring:

  • You contribute as Tech Lead/Individual Contributor to one of the backend products (Java or Go) building new features and increasing engineering excellence.
  • You work with your peers to overcome challenges and, collectively, do a better job. You co-create the area vision, nurture innovation within it and effectively resource the squads working on our platform backends.
  • You are the lead for performance management, training plans, remuneration and daily people management for your chapter. You ensure the tribe and squads have the right people and skills and develop the members of your chapter.
  • You lead the chapter meet-up and ensure way of work-related information is shared and craftsmanship improved.
  • You analyze market trends and derive the relevant and for the future necessary adjustments in the craftsmanship.

Our Platform – Monitoring Data Pipeline (MDPL)

At ING the landscape has become increasingly more complex with more applications added every day. We depend and rely on each other to deliver a reliable service to our customers that demands the very best of us.

Every single day, our engineers typically look at metrics, traces and logs to assess the health of their application, all of which need to be pulled from different sources and interfaces. MDPL provides a solution where they can combine data with just a few clicks, but being connected and dependent on a large chain of applications raises the need for insights beyond their application to run a reliable service.

To enable an end-to-end observability journey, we organize ourselves in 4 chapters, You will work with the other Chapter Leads and the Area Lead on enabling and driving the technical implementation of the platform.

Some of the products developed in the domain are:

  • IAT (Java): The ING Alert Transporter provides an automated way of sending application triggered alerts to the right people. With more than 3000 applications onboarded and 100k escalations daily, IAT It’s the central alerting system of ING, used from multiple countries.
  • Single View (Golang): allow to tie several MDPL products into one single view, combining and correlating the three types of telemetry, also with external dataset from infrastructure or signals created with Machine Learning.

How to succeed

  • A degree in computer science or a comparable education on an academic level
  • 5-8+ years of backends development, microservices, with either:
    • Java, Spring Boot
    • Golang
  • Experience with CI/CD and containerization – K8s or Openshift
  • Solid understanding of Software Architecture and System Design (at scale!)
  • Excellent team player in an international team, quality focused, service oriented, eager to learn
  • Experience within an agile organization, and inspiration to continuing working in this matter. Preferable coming from a role from: Tech Lead, Engineering Manager, IC, Staff Engineer
  • You are able to discuss with your stakeholders and product owner about features and stories and can translate these into software with real business value
  • Affinity with the fields we operate in: Observability, SRE, Monitoring, AIOps
  • Excellent oral and written English skills
  • You work hard and also want to have fun with colleagues

Our technology stack and practices include among others (but not limited to):

  • Monitoring and Observability tools as Grafana LGTM, Prometheus, Open Telemetry, Splunk.
  • A diverse set of programming languages: Java, Python and Golang.
  • Capabilities for AIOps, data engineering and machine learning.
  • Practices such as SRE, Chaos engineering.
