As the Market Risk Management NL department, we are responsible for managing the interest and liquidity risk of the ING NL balance sheet. In practice this means that we aim to stabilize the value and income generated from products sold to our clients as interest rates are changing. This means we need to have a good understanding of the products we sell, expected client behavior and quantitative skills to measure the risks arising from this. For this position we are looking for a person who is planning to graduate on an econometrics, quantitative finance or related study while looking to learn more about managing interest rate risk, ALM, can work in an independent manner, wants to work with real life data and is able to wrap up technical analyses into higher level impact and conclusions. The subject of the thesis would be to analyze two different types of hedging strategies that can be used in our risk management activities, the main benefit is that the thesis analysis will be used as input for actual decision making, hence you will have the opportunity to really make impact!

Location: Amsterdam Zuid Oost (36 hours)

The team

We are a relatively young team of approximately 30 international colleagues with average age about 35 which is divided into multiple squads each addressing its own topics, i.e. our core activities (hedging and risk reporting), modelling, managing ad-hoc projects. You will take part in one of the teams where you will have the opportunity to work alongside of our colleagues to also get a grasp of what we are doing on a day to day basis.

Roles and responsibilities

For this position we expect the following from you:

  • To perform a literature analysis independently based on existing policies and governance
  • To create a planning on how to get to the desired analysis/conclusions at the end of your internship
  • To independently perform an initial analysis on the outcomes and prepare discussion material
  • To translate your own analysis and discussions into a sound thesis

What you can expect from us:

  • We will provide you with an initial briefing on the different hedging setups that we have and details on the problem statement
  • We will provide you with the data and system access that is required for your analysis
  • We will provide you with the internal documentation on systems and models we use
  • We will be available for questions, support and discussions for very complex aspects of the internship

For this position we expect the following from you:

  • You are an eager and curious person looking to learn new skills and knowledge
  • You have a keen interest in ALM and interest rate risk
  • You are able to work with data, transforming and analyzing it in Excel/SQL
  • You are able to learn about and grasp complex financial concepts related to interest rate risk, (NPV’s, BPV’s)
  • You are able to work independently on an analysis but support from our colleagues is provided of course on specific knowledge.
  • You are able to translate complex technical concepts into higher level conclusions

We will provide you with access to data, systems and knowledge of our software in order to perform the required analyses.
