Risk Model Strategy & Monitoring Specialist

Apply now

Do you want to influence how one of Europe’s largest banks manages credit & model risk? As a Risk Model Strategy & Monitoring Specialist, you will help shape ING’s global approach to credit risk models, combining deep technical expertise with strategic thinking and regulatory insight. This is a unique opportunity to work across the full credit risk model landscape, from IRB and IFRS 9 to emerging modelling developments. You will provide guidance that supports senior management and board-level decision-making, and support & steer global and local model development teams implementing your group-wide methodologies.

The team

Integrated Risk (IR) provides a Group-wide view of ING’s risk profile, connecting governance, methodologies and risk insights to support informed decision-making across the bank.

Within Integrated Risk, the Integrated Risk Oversight (IRO) department focuses on the oversight of credit risk models. The Model Strategy & Monitoring team is responsible for shaping ING’s regulatory model strategy, maintaining robust model governance and methodologies, and overseeing the use of risk models across ING’s global organisation.

What makes this team unique is its broad scope. You will work across a wide range of portfolios, products and geographies, from mortgages to wholesale banking and non-bank financial institutions. The team brings together senior expertise in modelling, monitoring, regulation, governance and strategic oversight, creating opportunities to broaden your impact beyond a single niche.

Roles and responsibilities

This is not a role focused on one model, portfolio or stage of the lifecycle. You will work at Group level on questions that cut across IRB and IFRS 9, influence risk and capital decisions, and require both technical depth and strategic judgement.

  • Set the direction for ING’s Group-wide IRB and IFRS 9 model strategy and translate it into methodologies and implementing procedures.
  • Challenge how credit risk models inform portfolio management, capital allocation and balance-sheet steering, and advise on decisions with material business and regulatory consequences.
  • Advance model monitoring beyond standard performance reporting by developing forward-looking analyses, methods and decision criteria.
  • Identify model risks and emerging weaknesses across portfolios, products and countries, and determine where Group-level action is needed.
  • Resolve complex questions at the intersection of quantitative modelling, regulation, governance and business use, often without a ready-made answer.
  • Turn technical findings into clear choices and recommendations for senior management and model, risk and business committees.
  • Bring together specialists from across the model lifecycle and different parts of ING to reach decisions that can be applied consistently across the bank.
  • Help shape the future direction of risk modelling within a rapidly evolving regulatory and technological landscape.

How to succeed

This role requires strong credit risk modelling expertise, sound judgement and the ability to work effectively across technical and senior stakeholder groups.

You bring:

  • A Master's degree or PhD in Quantitative Finance, Econometrics, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in credit risk modelling, model risk management, risk policy, model governance or supervision. Experience across multiple areas is considered a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of at least one of IRB or IFRS 9 models and regulatory frameworks or accounting standards.
  • The ability to combine technical depth with strategic thinking, and to translate analysis into practical solutions.
  • Clear communication with technical specialists and senior management.
  • The ability to work across portfolios, products and jurisdictions and reach decisions with diverse stakeholders.
