ING is looking for a hands-on technical leader to architect and drive the development of our enterprise Process Orchestration Platform. This is not just an architecture role—you will be deeply involved in engineering decisions, coding standards, and platform evolution, ensuring scalability and reliability for thousands of internal consumers.

The team
You will be joining the Retail & Banking Technology (R&BT) - Workflow Management team. ING has thousands of engineers across the globe, the purpose of R&BT is to make their lives easier, as well as to get to a level of interoperability that makes reuse of components the standard. The Channels & Journey Orchestration tribe of R&BT is responsible for building, deploying, and managing services that own the customer experience and orchestrate the journey with ING’s products and services. The key responsibility area of this position is to drive the architecture and implementation for our process orchestration platform that supports all aspects of process automation, human workflow and case management.

Roles and responsibilities
You will define and build the backbone of our automation strategy, shaping a platform that accelerates business processes across a complex enterprise. Your leadership will influence technical direction, guide engineers, and deliver a product that sets new standards for process orchestration within ING. You will be pivotal in scaling the team towards a high performing and autonomous team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect and implement a scalable process orchestration platform using Camunda.

  • Provide technical leadership to engineers, ensuring best practices in design, coding, and deployment.

  • Define platform standards, integration patterns, and governance for internal consumers.

  • Collaborate with consumers, product owners and other stakeholders to align technical decisions with business goals.

  • Drive innovation in platform engineering, including performance, resilience, and automation.

  • Extensive Java engineering experience (design, development, performance tuning).

  • Proven expertise with Camunda or similar BPM/workflow engines.

  • Strong background in platform engineering for large-scale enterprise environments.

  • Modern front-end development experience (React, Angular, or similar frameworks).

  • Experience with Oracle databases, including schema design and optimization.

  • Ability to lead technical direction, mentor engineers, and influence architecture decisions.

  • Solid understanding of integration patterns, APIs, and distributed systems.

  • Knowledge of microservices architecture and event-driven systems.

  • Experience with cloud-native deployments (AWS, Azure, or GCP).

  • Management experience and experience in scaling high performing teams.

  • Experience with LLMs and agentic AI (designing, integrating, or leveraging AI-driven workflows).

  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and DevOps practices.
