Your role & work environment

Insurance is one of the fastest-growing domains within ING. While our current footprint is modest compared to traditional banking areas, the growth trajectory—especially in retail and the emerging business insurance segment—is remarkable.

As a Chapter Lead in Insurance, you will blend deep technical expertise in full-stack front-end and API development with delivery leadership and people management in a dynamic international setting. You will lead a chapter of approximately 25 external engineers, taking ownership of IT flows across all ING insurance products—Life, Living, Mobility, Travel, and Business.

You’ll drive the development of new digital features and ensure seamless integration with backend systems from our insurance partners (e.g., NN Insurance, AXA) and ING’s internal landscape. Collaboration is key: you’ll work closely with business stakeholders shaping product strategy, delivery squads executing on it, and the platform team ensuring reliability and support across all flows and APIs.

We are looking for an experienced Engineer (minimum “proficient” level according to the Dreyfus model) to take responsibility for combined deliveries within the Tribe Insurance, covering Front End & java API’s. Next to that, the role involves dedicating time to building expertise within your chapter while developing and coaching chapter members.

Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities

Delivery Leadership

  • Lead a chapter of front-end and Java engineers, fostering engineering excellence and cross-team collaboration.
  • Ensure development of new and updated flows using ING’s standards and agile practices.
  • Proactively identify and remove delivery impediments.
  • Stay current with IT trends and maintain a forward-looking technical vision.
  • Build domain knowledge in insurance products and services.
  • Partner with Squad Masters and Product Leads to plan, prioritize, and execute initiatives.

People and Chapter management

  • Drive performance optimization and capability development across your chapter.
  • Recognize top talent, address underperformance early, and conduct continuous evaluations.
  • Mentor and coach engineers both technically and professionally.
  • Manage recruitment, onboarding/offboarding, and team composition.
  • Lead external resource management (onshore/offshore), balancing throughput, budget, and long-term team growth.
  • Align resource planning with squad needs, collaborating closely with your IT Area Lead, Product Area Lead, and Tribe Product Lead.

Your team and department

  • You’ll be part of the Retail Investment & Insurance Tech management team. The Insurance Tech team comprises ~40 engineers across Brussels, India, and Manila.

Who Are We Looking For?

A driven and collaborative leader who:

  • Takes initiative and delivers results.
  • Thrives in dynamic, complex environments.
  • Empowers others and fosters team success.
  • Challenges the status quo and proposes innovative solutions.

Technical Expertise

  • Proven experience in web technologies, front-end development, and Java APIs.
  • Proficiency in HTML, Java, Spring Boot, and modern front-end frameworks.
  • Experience managing integration services (APIs) within complex application landscapes.
  • Familiarity with ING’s standards, frameworks, and IT architecture is a plus.
  • Understanding of DevOps practices, especially Azure DevOps.

Personal Profile

  • Strong communicator (English proficiency required).
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering or related fields.
  • Detail-oriented, proactive, and eager to learn.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; able to engage and challenge business stakeholders.
