Data Science Chapter Lead (Wholesale Banking)

Apply now

Think Forward!
Our goal is to help people advance in life and in business. ING is a well‑established global financial institution with strong financials, a broad international footprint, and omni‑channel strategies. If you value innovation, agile ways of working balanced with compliance and quality, reliable service, and a practical, impact‑driven approach, this is the place for you.

ING Analytics is a global organization responsible for realizing this vision by positioning ING as a leading data‑driven bank, both within the financial sector and beyond. The organization consists of multiple Global Analytics Centres of Excellence across key capabilities such as Pricing, Risk Management, Financial Crime, Customer Intelligence, and People Analytics, supported by strong coordination across data management, technology, customer journey, UX, and external partnerships.

As part of ING Analytics Wholesale Banking (INGA‑WB), you will contribute to building algorithmic, 10x data‑driven products that generate tangible value for our clients and revenue for the bank.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Chapter Lead Data Science (ING Analytics) to mentor and develop a chapter of data scientists while remaining a hands‑on senior data scientist yourself. You will lead by example and have up to 8 data scientists reporting directly to you.

In this role, you will work as a data scientist on a long‑term project while ensuring the delivery of high‑quality analysis and machine learning outcomes across the portfolio. You will provide quality assurance for analysis results, documentation, and production‑ready code, and help ensure that insights delivered to decision‑makers meet internal and external requirements.

Equally important: you will grow the craftsmanship and capabilities of both the individuals in your chapter and the team as a whole. You will serve as a key liaison to business stakeholders and risk/audit partners, and you will be expected to mentor even the most senior data scientists on technical topics.

What You’ll Do

  • Oversee direction setting and vision across multiple Data Science projects.
  • Mentor, grow, and evaluate a team of junior and senior Data Scientists, acting as a strong role model and technical mentor.
  • Ensure high‑quality delivery of analysis and ML solutions across projects, including R&D where needed to reach world‑class solutions.
  • Take responsibility for Quality Assurance of Data Science models and outputs, ensuring they meet stringent internal validation checks before production.
  • Lead chapter‑wide upskilling and knowledge sharing to keep the team at the forefront of Data Science techniques.
  • Develop expertise and guide delivery in applying machine learning, NLP, and LLM techniques for use cases such as:
    • Automated data extraction from documents
    • Outlier and fraud detection
    • Representation learning
    • Entity resolution
    • Time‑series analysis
    • Network & graph applications
  • Promote best practices and quality standards for fit‑for‑purpose model pipelines aligned with model governance requirements.
  • Collaborate closely within squads — challenge the status quo and build what matters.
  • Actively learn the domain, engage stakeholders, and tell compelling stories with data to help make our bank — and society — safer.
  • Proactively and constructively find compromises and solutions when trade‑offs or conflicts arise.

What You Bring

(Requirements — based strictly on your Chapter Lead input)

  • 8+ years of experience in data science, with some data engineering and/or other technology‑related capabilities.
  • Proven experience managing, mentoring, and steering multiple data scientists in a data science project over a longer period of time, with a clear vision on how to do so.
  • Strong data science background in Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, Physics, or a similar technical field.
  • Strong capability in AI, machine learning, and statistics, with affinity to stay up‑to‑date with the latest developments.
  • Experience in applying machine learning, NLP, and LLM techniques for:
    • Automated data extraction from documents
    • Outlier and fraud detection
    • Representation learning
    • Entity resolution
    • Time‑series analysis
    • Network & graph applications
  • Experience using PySpark for large, distributed data transformations and preparation is strongly preferred.
  • Publications in top‑tier Machine Learning conferences or journals is strongly preferred.
  • Affinity for working with financial data.
  • Experience with a corporate environment and/or the financial industry.
  • Strong soft skills and communication skills (important due to team diversity).
  • Ability to stay curious, keep learning, and take on responsibility — with a mindset aligned to continuous growth.
