Backend Engineer

As aBackend Engineer, you'll join ourRetail Banking technology team, where you'll play a key role in designing, developing, and enhancing backend solutions that support critical banking services.

Beyond hands-on engineering, you'll help shape technical decisions, promote engineering excellence, and support the growth of fellow engineers. You'll collaborate with colleagues across ING's global network to deliver secure, scalable, and reliable solutions that improve the banking experience for millions of customers.

What You'll Do

• Develop and maintain reliable, high-quality backend applications

• Design and build RESTful APIs and backend services

• Write automated tests and champion quality-first engineering practices

• Set up and enhance CI/CD pipelines

• Apply DevOps and Agile ways of working

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and deliver new features

• Incorporate security best practices throughout the software development lifecycle

• Contribute to team growth through knowledge sharing, mentoring, and technical interviews

• Continuously learn and explore emerging technologies and engineering practices
  

What We're Looking For

Required Skills & Experience

• Proven experience developing backend applications usingJava 8, Java 11, or higher

• Strong experience withSpringandSpring Boot

• Solid understanding ofObject-Oriented Programming (OOP)principles

• Experience building and consumingRESTful APIs

• Hands-on experience withGitor other version control tools

• Experience withunit testingand test automation frameworks such as JUnit and Mockito

• Strong software engineering fundamentals, including design patterns and clean coding practices

• Excellent communication and collaboration skills

• Experience working within Agile development teams
  

Nice to Have

• Experience with SQL databases, JPA, Hibernate, or related technologies

• Knowledge of microservices architecture

• Familiarity with containerization and orchestration concepts

• Experience with CI/CD tools and build automation tools such as Maven

• Exposure to cloud technologies and modern engineering practices
